In the ever-evolving landscape of healthcare, a revolutionary approach is emerging that promises to transform how we understand and treat complex conditions like brain injury and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This approach, known as Integrative Medicine—and more specifically, 3rd Generation Medicine—shifts the focus from traditional biomolecular and population-based treatments to a more individualized, bioelectrical framework. At the forefront of this movement are visionary leaders and organizations dedicated to harnessing the power of the body's bioelectrical systems to promote healing and recovery.
Leading the Charge
Peter Demitry, MD, MPH: The National Foundation for Integrative Medicine (NFIM)
“We must shift our focus from healthcare to health – from perpetually providing healthcare to periodically restoring health.” - Peter F. Demitry, MD, MPH
Leading this transformation is Dr. Peter Demitry, a retired U.S. Air Force Colonel and physician with a remarkable career spanning medicine and aviation. As the Executive Director of the National Foundation for Integrative Medicine (NFIM), Dr. Demitry is driving efforts to evolve healthcare from what he calls "2nd Generation Medicine"—focused on biomolecular and population-oriented approaches—to "3rd Generation Medicine," which prioritizes bioelectrical and individual-tailored care. With over 28 years of active duty, including his role as Assistant Air Force Surgeon General, and a unique distinction as the only physician to graduate from the Air Force Test Pilot School, Dr. Demitry brings a multidisciplinary perspective to this innovative field. Through NFIM, he is committed to accelerating access to cutting-edge medical solutions, particularly for veterans struggling with PTSD and brain injuries.
Todd Ovokaitys, MD: QiGenerations, Gematria and QiGenix Clinics
"The biohack is the Stack! It's how you stack it. It's like a symphony. It's where you start, what things you layer together, how we sequence, how you time them, how you develop theme, how you create a crescendo of the fact and the ultimate resolution." - Todd Ovokaitys, MD
Complementing this vision is Dr. Todd Ovokaitys, a pioneering physician-scientist whose work in quantum biology and biophysics is redefining longevity and rejuvenation. Dr. Ovokaitys has developed the Ovokaitys Method, a holistic approach that integrates electromagnetic fields, regenerative medicine, and neurocognitive therapies to address the body’s biomolecular, bioelectrical, and neurocognitive systems as a unified whole. His patented technologies, including the groundbreaking SONG Laser, are at the heart of this method, offering precision bioelectric modulation to enhance healing. Through QiGenix Clinics, Dr. Ovokaitys puts these innovations into practice, providing advanced bioelectric therapies aimed at reversing aging biomarkers and promoting systemic recovery.
E.M. Burlingame, NFIM, and the Honos Foundation
“Throughout history it’s been the conflux of leading warriors and cutting-edge doctors, not systems, that bring health and medical innovation and care to the world.” - EM Burlingame
E.M. Burlingame, a Senior Research Fellow at NFIM and the Founder of the Honos Foundation, contributes to this effort. With experience in signal processing and a personal history of traumatic brain injury, he works on using these techniques to help with brain injuries and mood disorders. At NFIM, he leads the Jason Dawson and Stewart McGurk Brain Health Research Fellowship, which looks into integrative ways to support brain health. Through the Honos Foundation, originally set up to assist entrepreneurial projects in challenging areas, he now seeks effective medical solutions for special operations veterans dealing with PTSD and underlying brain injuries, in collaboration with Dr. Demitry and Dr. Ovokaitys.
The Core of 3rd Generation Medicine
"Modern medicine is a negation of health. It isn't organized to serve human health, but only itself, as an institution. It makes more people sick than it heals.
The medical establishment has become a major threat to health. The disabling impact of professional control over medicine has reached the proportions of an epidemic." - Ivan Illich, from his book Medical Nemesis: The Expropriation of Health
The convergence of these leaders and their organizations—NFIM, QiGenix Clinics, and the Honos—represents a powerful alliance in the pursuit of advancing 3rd Generation Medicine. At its heart is the understanding that the human body is a complex system of systems, or "stacks," comprising three key components:
Biomolecular: The chemical and genetic building blocks of life.
Bioelectrical: The electromagnetic fields that govern cellular and systemic behavior.
Neurocognitive: The brain’s processing and identity functions.
Among these, the bioelectrical system is considered paramount, orchestrating the functioning of the brain and body through a vast network of "fields within fields." Integrative Medicine emphasizes restoring proper bioelectrical functioning by addressing all three stacks simultaneously, marking a significant shift from the biomolecular focus of traditional medicine.
3rd Generation Medicine takes this further, moving away from population-wide, one-size-fits-all treatments to highly individualized therapies tailored to each person’s unique bioelectrical profile. To illustrate, think of the body as a symphony orchestra: traditional medicine tunes individual instruments (biomolecular interventions), while 3rd Generation Medicine ensures the entire orchestra plays in harmony, guided by the conductor—the bioelectrical fields coordinating every note and rhythm. Bioelectric fields ranging up from single cells to communities of cells, to organs, systems, and to the body and brain as an integrated single whole. This is increasingly achieved with real time feedback of tissue changes which inform changes in energy pulses, amplitude, waveforms and frequencies that make these technologies personalized and precision for that patient, on that day and that time.
Addressing Brain Injury and PTSD
“Twenty years of the Global War on Terror left many thousands of Special Operations veterans with severe injuries and medical conditions which, despite immense expenditures, the healthcare industry has demonstrated itself to be incapable or unwilling to address.” - Peter F. Demitry, MD, MPH
One of the most urgent applications of this approach is in treating traumatic brain injuries (TBI)and the often-accompanying PTSD. Research shows that PTSD is invariably linked to underlying physical brain injuries, which disrupt the delicate balance of the body’s bioelectrical systems. Conventional treatments often fall short because they fail to address the full spectrum of dysregulation across the biomolecular, bioelectrical, and neurocognitive stacks.
At NFIM, Honos Foundation, and QiGenix Clinics, groundbreaking work is underway to identify, seek out and to develop bioelectrical treatment modalities that when combined with tailored biomolecular solutions, ranging from high-energy charged nutraceuticals to Very Small Embryonic Like (VSEL) stem cells, directly target and restore proper field health. These include:
SONG Laser: Uses specific electromagnetic frequencies to enhance cellular repair and guide nutrient delivery.
Symphonic Biofield Optimization: Employs sound and light frequencies to promote systemic coherence.
Electro-Equiscope: non-invasive medical device, uses microcurrent technology to detect and correct electrical imbalances in the body, supporting natural healing and alleviating pain.
Neurogen: non-invasive therapeutic tool, uses high-frequency electronic waves to alleviate symptoms and neuromuscular pain associated with neuropathy and chronic nerve conditions.
Many other solutions ranging from highly bio-available nutraceuticals to stem cells to frequency specific microcurrent, hyperbaric pressure chambers, and much more.
Innovations intended to heal not just the physical damage but also the deeper disruptions caused by brain injuries and PTSD emerges as the product of underlying brain injury.
Critical Missing Piece: Identity Stack Redevelopment
"A warrior's strength lies not only in their ability to fight but in their capacity to remain whole—body, mind, and spirit. A healthy identity stack is the unseen armor that shields them from the chaos of battle and the weight of duty, allowing them to serve with honor, return with purpose, and live with peace." - EM Burlingame
A critical yet often overlooked aspect of recovery from severe brain injuries is the redevelopment of the identity stack. Brain injuries fundamentally alter a person’s sense of self, destroying the "old individual" forever, if the injuries are sufficient. Which, in the case of combat veterans, and combat arms in general, is virtually always the case. Traditional medical approaches rarely address this profound change of identity, the dissolution of the individual’s identity stack. Leaving patients struggling to recognize who they now are and will be as they move through the physical healing process.
Current practice is to address symptoms as psychiatric rather than physical issues to be addressed with drugs and therapy rather than with medical care as with any other broken or torn or ruptured part of the body. The integrative strategies championed by Todd Ovokaitys and Peter Demitry et al, emphasize not only physical healing but also the ongoing process of identity reconstruction. Helping patients navigate their recovery with a renewed sense of purpose and self. This is who I am now and it's good. Emphasizing, as with major athletes recovering from serious injuries, the repair of the body fully integrated with sports psychology, identity, on matching physical and psychological healing together as an inseparable whole.
A Collaborative Vision for the Future
Through their collective expertise and innovative approaches, Peter, Todd, E.M., and their respective organizations are not only advancing the field of Integrative and Functional Medicine but also offering hope to countless individuals—particularly veterans—who have been underserved and outright failed by conventional practices. By harnessing the power of 3rd Generation Medicine, they are transforming healthcare from a system focused on managing symptoms to one that fosters true healing and vitality.
"The integration of quantum biology, biophysics and bioelectrics, into medical bioenergetics (Medicine 3.0 - 3rd Generation Medicine) heralds a new era in medicine, where the subtle manipulation of energy fields becomes as fundamental as the manipulation of molecules." - Todd Ovokaitys, MD
